Interpretation of “Connect”


The main character is surrounded by boring and mundane people that are noticeably exhausted and are going back to their homes after a long day in their tiring jobs. She is perceived as individualistic and invisible. She is pushed and walked over as if she did not exist by these other people, so she uses her headphones to show her will to get into her own head and imagination, where everything seems to be spontaneous and different. She wants to escape the boring reality.

The lighting on the other hand does favour the main character of the girl as she is lit and more noticeable in spite of the darkness of her surroundings. It also helps back the statement of her being different and not being comfortable in the boring routine: being the small light while everyone else is consumed with darkness in their ordinary lives. When she puts on her headphones and her imagination takes place, the light seems to be somewhat brighter, showing the other people being infected by her spontaneity. The lighting also helps tell a brief love interest story between the man and the woman, almost forgetting the fact that they are in a bus, on of the least romantic places.

  Writing a Twist 24 Hours. The local fuel station, open 24 hours, was deserted due to the late hours of the night. There were no clients around. It was too late for anyone to stop to get a refill and too early for our usual drivers to stop by to have their usual breakfast. How does the director make an impact on the audience through the character of Girl?

How does the director make an impact on the audience through the character of Girl?  The short film expresses so much in spite of being simple and low budget with the use of natural lighting and using to their advantage the natural grey of England. The lack of colours and the cloudy weather makes it easier to perceive the main characters feelings indirectly without having to analyse her body language or words.  At first the girl seems to be talkative, independent and an extrovert because of the way she speaks her mind without worrying what other people may think, but as the short film goes on we understand that, in spite of being so carefree, she is hurting inside.
