Analysis of enigma codes on “Connect”

The Girl protagonist is clearly shy and an introvert. This is shown in multiple occasions: when people push her over as if she did not exist and when this happens again when other passengers go on the bus. She does not respond to the bad manners and, instead, uses the headphones to isolate herself from the loud world. Another sign of being an introvert. Once the headphones are on, it seems that her imagination takes over her.

The other characters are normal people that are, most likely, getting out of work and going home after a long and tiring day. It is a realistic view of what would be seen in a bus at the end of the day. The Man seems to be the only one that recognises her as he pays attention to her until she is pushed away (once again). There seems to be a connection between the two of them, as if the Man was happy to be taken out of the monotony for a moment with the uncommon approach of the Girl. She also seems to be happy to have someone’s attention. But once the man leaves, almost looking at her apologetically, she goes back to imagining.

The location is firstly given with the characteristic direction of the vehicles in England. And the Oyster card reader along with the busy streets full of people, leaves the audience to suppose that the short film takes place in London. It also hints that it is a big city because of the business men dressing in suits, that are most likely working on offices.

This short film has many enigmas: Why did the Girl imagine the business man shooting a woman for a bus seat? Why is she trying to touch the Man’s hand? Does she only imagine weird scenarios once she has the headphones on? What is the genre of this short film?
Nearing the end of the short film, another enigma appears to make the audience question themselves: why is she imagining the other passengers dancing a choreography? And what does it mean or represent?

The film also treats two complete opposite themes: monotony versus an sprightly environment. The monotony of the bus and people going back to their houses after a long day with tired expressions is the opposite to what she imagines. She wants something unexpected and random to break the monotony of the everyday routine. To see something happen that will cheer up the other passengers too.

At the end, she finds herself feeling emotions when she imagines something unexpected happening. The lack of emotions and “colour” in the bus pushes her to create these scenarios. Is this the first time this has happened or is the Girl usually like this? Does this end once the headphones are off? It is not clear how it ends.
