Auteur Research: Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder, apart from being a producer and a screenwriter, is the director of many recognisable films , premiered in the past fifteen years, many of which have a creative signature that indicates that it has been directed by him. Films such as “Dawn of the Dead”, “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice”, “Man of Steel”, “Justice League” and “300” were produced by his wife Deborah Snyder and recorded in the studios of Warner Bros, which apparently demanded a lot of changes in his films during post-production.

Snyder is considered an auteur for his directing style, the aesthetics and the use of themes of history and mythology overall. These films are mostly considered part of the action genre and Snyder uses speed-ramping in most of the fighting scenes, which gives a better visual experience to the audience when it is supported by other special effects. He also has a particular way of framing and blocking a shot with symmetrical long shots, where the hero is centered and usually flanked on both sides. He does this as well to glorify the heros and to statuesque their physics as he does in “Justice League” and in “Man of Steel”.
Zack Snyder’s films have a distinctive style and aesthetic that makes it easy to recognise his signature, as he likes to portray filtered and desaturated colour grading, grimy browns, bronzes and muted concrete greys. The colour palette varies through the story line with a purpose to get the audience more attracted to the film and help upgrade the scenography with this lighting and what could be considered as a mise-en-scene detail.
Although his films are recognised mostly because of the fight scenes, the use of the rain effect in most of his projects and the omnipresent screens are very characteristic of Snyder. This last one is used to explain what is happening around the world due to the actions or news related to the main character and it can be seen in “Dawn of the Dead”, “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and in “Man of Steel”.

Auteurism is when a film director influences their films so much that they rank as their author, and I believe it is fair to say that Zack Snyder is an auteur mostly for the environment that he portrays in each one of his films. He could also be considered an auteur because of the similarities of the themes in the storylines based on history and mythology. Even though some might believe Snyder to be a more vulgar auteur, he is still one at the end of the day.
